Carol Ann (Bendish) Hatzenbuhler was born in Mandan on December 16, 1945, to John Bendish and Anna (Rebenitsch) Bendish. She was the fifth child of six children. She was educated in Fort Rice until the eigth grade and then attended and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Bismarck.
On May 29, 1965, Carol married the love of her life, Donald Hatzenbuhler, at St. Martin Catholic Church in Huff, ND. Carol and Donald made their home on their ranch north of Solen where they raised their six children.
Carol’s grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was always present, part of their everyday lives in such a tangible way. From supporting them at their ball games, rodeos, fun Sunday fishing trips and more. When there wasn’t a baby in her lap you could find her in the kitchen cooking, baking or canning, gardening, or going to the casino and horse sales with Donald. She enjoyed camping trips with her kids and grandchildren. Carol loved her daily routine of driving around the ranch with Donald to “supervise” the boys’ ranch work.
Carol’s door was always open-- you could just walk into her home and her family often did. They all knew they had a place to stay to enjoy her hospitality and generosity; her infamous homemade hot ham and cheese sandwiches were the best and the coffee was always on. The door was always open and the food was always plentiful.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Donald Hatzenbuhler; her six children, Dawn (Dar) Schmidt (Flasher), DJ Hatzenbuhler (Tampa, FL), Nikki (Terry) Brandt (Granville), Chris (LeAnn) Hatzenbuhler (Solen), Dallas (Joy) Hatzenbuhler (Solen), Brandon (Lacey) Hatzenbuhler (Solen); her 19 grandchildren, Tate (Hadley), Wyett (Jessica), Dalton Magilke, Kinley Brandt, Callee Jo, McKenna (fiancé Cody Bernstein), Secora, Logan, Gentry Schmidt, Michael, Garrett, Braxton, Brayden Hatzenbuhler, Traetyn, Kashtyn, Kingstyn Hatzenbuhler, Dylan, Kord and Tee Hatzenbuhler; her two great-grandchildren, Rhett Schmidt & Britt Magilke; her sisters, Agnes (Harley) Jennings, Gladys (Alton) Bauer, Rita (Gordon) Cermak; sisters-in-law, Sharon Bendish, Mary Bendish, Diane George, Shirley (Earl) Heinert, and Tootie (Al) Belinsky; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; infant great-grandson, Sterling Magilke; brothers, Richard and Arnold Bendish; and brother-in-law, Nick Hatzenbuhler.
