Angeline Gieser

August 24, 1929 — November 6, 2021

Angeline (Jonas) Gieser, 92, of Mandan, passed away on November 6, 2021.  Her passing was eased with the constant support of her family.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan.  The service will be livestreamed at the bottom of Angeline’s obituary page on the funeral home website.  Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 6:30 PM on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Parish Vigil and Catholic Daughter’s Rosary at 6:30 PM.

Angeline was born August 24, 1929, in Petrel, ND, the first of six children to Nickolaus and Eva (Schaaf) Jonas.  On July 11, 1949, Angeline was united in marriage to Mathias John “MJ” Gieser near Keldron, SD.  They worked side by side farming.  In 1963 they moved to Mandan.  Angeline worked for the Holiday Inn and Ramada Inn in Bismarck as head housekeeper for 15 years.  In 1972 they moved north of Mandan.  MJ passed away in the fall of 1994, and Angeline continued to live at their home for five years.  In 1999, she moved into Mandan where she enjoyed living at Liberty Heights as many of her neighbors were friends she had known for many years.  She made the community a lively and fun place and kept her neighbors smiling and helped them enjoy their retirement.

Angeline and MJ owned and operated a butcher shop north of Mandan for 30 years.  They also raised rabbits and had an extensive garden that they harvested for the Farmer’s Market.  In their retirement, the couple took up woodworking and crafting, selling their creations at craft fairs around the state.  Angeline was well-known for her creative talents and excellent cooking.  Needlework, crocheting, and other creative pursuits were her primary hobbies.  She excelled at crocheting and made many afghans, dishtowels, and other crafts for her family and friends, heirlooms they will cherish forever.

Angeline is survived by her children, Paul (Carol Goldade) Gieser, Mandan, Ken (Twila Asplund) Gieser, Mandan, Kathleen (Jim) Brunnworth, IL, Andrew (Beverly Bowers, deceased) Gieser, Strasburg, VA, Linda Gieser, Mandan, and Roslyn “Roz” (David) Barth, Mandan; 18 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Goeres and Julia Wysk; brother, Leonard Jonas; many nieces and nephews; and dozens of friends and extended family members.

Angeline was preceded in death by her parents; husband, MJ; infant daughter, JoAnne Gieser; brothers, Jim and Adolph Jonas; and daughter-in-law, Beverly Gieser.

Angeline was a faithful Catholic, attending church every Sunday with her family, to whom she was devoted above all else.  She was a strong woman, never hesitated to speak her mind, and was a great role model for standing up for what she believed was right.  Angeline was a much-loved wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, daughter, and friend.  Her passing leaves her family broken-hearted.  We miss you and will carry you in our hearts forever as our Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Sister, and Friend.

Donations in Angeline’s honor can be sent to the ND Veterans Cemetery or St. Joseph Catholic Church of Mandan.
