Bill was born on June 25, 1928 to Hieronymus and Rosa Maria (Emter) Berger on the family farm in rural Glen Ullin. He was raised and educated in the Glen Ullin area and entered the United States Army in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. Bill married Beatrice Fleck on June 30, 1953 in Solen, ND.

Bill worked for Cloverdale Foods for 24 ½ years but was a Millwright by trade and was a member of the Carpenter's Union Local 1091. Bill retired from the Millwright trade at the age of 85. He was a very talented woodworker and there was nothing he couldn't make, fix or correct. Bill was also a talented musician and was the founder of the band "City Boys" which played at many wedding dances and parties. He loved playing and listening to old time music and could play many instruments but the accordion, harmonica and guitar were his favorite. Bill loved playing music with his sons, as they all played an instrument as well. One of Bill's greatest achievements was appearing on television playing the accordion accompanied by his brother Leonard. Bill and Beatrice loved attending auction sales; he also enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with his family. He had a 1966 Mustang convertible that he restored and loved to drive. It was his pride and joy. Above all else his family was central in his life and he enjoyed holidays and other times spent with them. Bill was lovingly referred to as "Pa" by all his children. Bill was also a lifetime member of the Mandan Eagles and Mandan Moose.

Bill will be deeply missed by his wife of 63 years, Beatrice; daughters, Karen Rohr, Mandan, ND, Jolene (Vern) Miller, Mapleton, ND, Michelle (Robert Boehm) Berger, Mandan, ND, Melanie (Nathan) Schlosser, Mandan, ND, Nadine (Lance Belohlavek) Berger, Mandan, ND and DeeAnn (Jason) Jahner, Mandan, ND; sons, Douglas (Diana) Berger, Duluth, MN, Darrold Berger, Glen Ullin, ND, DeWayne (Katie Bates) Berger, Superior, WI, Donovan (Jacki) Berger, Foxboro, WI, Dale (Marcia) Berger, Mandan, ND and Dean Berger, Mandan, ND; 36 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren on the way; sisters, Helen Stein, Mandan, ND, Cecilia Geiger, Mandan, ND, Agnes Vetter, Linton, ND and Anna (Clemens) Fleck, Bismarck, ND; brothers, Leonard (Alberta) Berger, St. Anthony, ND and Raymond (Diane) Berger, Mandan, ND; sisters-in-law, Katie Berger, Pierre, SD, Emily (Joe) Schmidt, Bismarck, ND, Gardine Haff, Mandan, ND, Caroline (Matt) Magilke, Bismarck, ND, Mary Bendish, Mandan, ND Pauline (Roger) Hatzenbuehler, St. Paul, MN and Edna Fleck, Mandan, ND; brothers-in-law, Raymond (Joyce) Fleck, Mandan, ND, Jack Fleck, Mandan, ND, David (Sandy) Fleck, Mandan, ND and Lawrence (Joanne) Fleck, Portland, OR along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
