Timothy Johnson

September 29, 1959 — January 19, 2025

Mandan

Our brother Tim was born on September 29, 1959, and journeyed to be with his Heavenly family on January 19, 2025, after a brief diagnosis of cancer. He was the fourth of five children born to Leif and Angie Johnson.

Tim was one of the hardest-working men you could ever meet. He could be independent and stubborn, yet he had a heart of gold and would help just about anyone—though he never sought recognition for it. A tough negotiator, he approached everything with the mindset of caring for his cattle, his crops, and his land.

Tim graduated from Mandan High School in 1977 and graduated from Bismarck Junior College in 1979. He spent his entire life on the family farm and ranch southwest of Mandan, exactly where he wanted to be. Tim never married, once saying that he was "married to his life's work." Though he didn’t have children of his own, he cherished his seven nieces and nephews, always ready with a joke or a story. He especially looked forward to the annual hunting weekend with family every fall.

Tim learned the day-to-day operations of agriculture and livestock management at the heels of his father, Leif. He deeply missed his mother Angie’s cooking, baking, and sense of humor. Over the years, he had several incredible cattle dogs—his last, Cliff, remains at a loss without his best buddy and provider of hot dogs and duplex cookies.

Tim's first vehicle was a 1969 Cougar, his first and only car, and followed by a long line of trucks. He could drive and fix just about anything with tires and a steering wheel. While not a religious man, Tim’s church was the prairie, the barns, and the fields—land first cultivated by his paternal grandparents, Harold and Varda Johnson, in the late 1800s. For over 120 years, Black Angus cattle have grazed their land, a legacy Tim took immense pride in continuing.

Tim was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harold and Varda Johnson; maternal grandparents, Peter and Rose Helbing; twin sisters; his parents, Leif and Angie Johnson; his brother and business partner, Tom Johnson; his nephew and Godson, Chad; and a blessed multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Tim is survived by his brothers, Roger (Connie) Johnson, and Vernon (Diane) Johnson; sister, Gayle Johnson; and sister-in-law, Stephanie Johnson. He is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews, Tiffany (Tim) Kramer, Sara (Tim) Oldenkamp, Ross (Anne) Johnson, Kari (Walter) Mensen, Melissa (Jared) Hedman, Adam (Joanna) Johnson, and their children, as well as his niece and four-wheeling buddy, Josie Johnson.
