Richard (Dick) Herman Schmidt was born September 5, 1944, and passed away, unexpectedly, at his home on Tuesday, June 27, 2023. He was raised on the family farm south of Mandan. In 1962, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Whetstone until 1966. He returned to the farm to do what he loved. He married the love of his life, Marlene Laubner, and on June 19 they celebrated 53 years of marriage. Working as a team they accomplished many things, but supporting their three children and family has always been a priority. Their loving family includes: Janel (Glenn) Gray, Minot, David (Brenda) Schmidt, Bismarck and Gregg (Cloris) Schmidt, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Brent Job (Alesha Pfenning), Kendra (Marty) Harper, Ryan Schmidt, Mathew Schmidt, Gabrielle Schmidt, and Madison Schmidt; and three great-grandchildren, Jesamie, Jackson and Juliana Harper.
One of Dick’s happiest days was when the bulk tank shorted out and the dairy cows were sold. He didn’t have many hobbies but liked to BS with family and friends and looked forward to the yearly deer hunting escapades. Some years were more exciting than others and he was reminded by his wife that he should set a good example!
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Marlene, children, Janel (Glenn) Gray, David (Brenda) Schmidt, and Gregg (Cloris) Schmidt, six grandchildren, Brent Job (Alesha Pfenning), Kendra (Marty) Harper, Ryan Schmidt, Mathew Schmidt, Gabrielle Schmidt, and Madison Schmidt, three great-grandchildren, Jesamie, Jackson and Juliana Harper, one sister, Linda (Leonard) Schwartzbauer, two brothers, Jim, Dan (Loraine), and one aunt, Erna Schmidt, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Dorothy Schmidt, Marlene’s parents, Henry and Mary Laubner, infant sister, Mary Ann Schmidt, sister-in-law Mary Ann Schmidt, nephew, Brad Schmidt and many beloved aunts and uncles.
A big thank you to our family, friends and neighbors for all the support. You’re the best!
