Rynee Kellar was born April 21, 1941 to Charles and Louisa (Koch) Kellar in Wilton, ND. He grew up and attended school in the Wilton, ND area. Rynee worked at the ND Department of Transportation for 47 years before retiring in 2006. On October 9, 1965, he married Eugenia “Jeanie” Ternes in Bismarck where they raised their family.
His passion for the outdoors was evident in all of the work he did behind the scenes to ensure there were recreation areas for local fishermen and boaters. Many outdoorsmen have benefited from the work he has done. An avid angler and fishing guide, Rynee knew the Missouri River like no one else. Rynee was outgoing and loved to visit with friends and meet new people. He would often take a short trip uptown that would easily turn into a long one as he stopped and visited. Independent in his ways, he was never lacking in self-determination. His strong work ethic was complemented by his quick sense of humor. Whether it was electrical or mechanical work or anything he didn’t know how to do, he would research it and find out how to do it and teach himself. Rynee enjoyed traveling. Especially memorable were trips to Colorado and Indiana to visit his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Bismarck Knights of Columbus and served on the Burleigh County Water Commission until October of 2011. He was cofounder of Bis-Man Reel & Rec, and was especially proud of the organization’s Take A Kid Fishing program. Rynee will be remembered for his appreciation for the outdoors and nature in general. To him it wasn’t just a hobby; it was a way of life.
This special man will be dearly missed and always remembered by his wife, Jeanie, Bismarck; daughters, Stephanie (Mark) Flemmer, Pueblo, CO and Teresa Kellar, Bismarck; son, Patrick (Tina), Bismarck; grandchildren, Deidre and Kendall Flemmer, and Karston and Quinn Kellar; sisters, Zoe McClintock, Baldwin, ND; Elsie Tongaofa, Wilton, ND; and brothers, Ernest, Eau Claire, WI; Theodore (Sandy), California; Dennis (Susan) Bismarck.
Rynee was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to “Open Your Heart”, a charity which held deep meaning to him.
