Phill Sjoberg passed away on February, 24th 2023 in his home surrounded by family after an 8 year battle with cancer.
He was born on April 5, 1985 in Greeley, CO. He grew up there with his father Dave Sjoberg (Justine Gutierrez), mother Patti Bollig (Paul Scholar), and younger brother Andrew Sjoberg (wife Keri, nephews Beauden & Benedict). He graduated from University High School and went to college at the University of Northern Colorado. It was there that he met his future wife Stacey (Belohlavek).
After graduation they moved to Rochester, MN where they worked and lived for two years before moving to Mandan, ND to make their home. They were fortunate to create some beautiful friendships and spend time with MN family that would help them weather the storms that were ahead, as Rochester became a place for treatment.
In 2010, Phill and Stacey were married. Shortly after, two sons followed: JJ (10) and Isaiah (9). His marriage and his sons were truly his greatest pride. He spent many hours playing catch, pitching, rebounding, refereeing, encouraging, and coaching his boys. He’s always been extremely proud of them both. His best days were spent watching them learn and grow. He especially enjoyed watching them play sports and it brought him great joy.
He played many sports throughout his life, but was most passionate about softball and golf. As any family, friend, or teammate would attest, he was truly exceptional at both. He had so much fun playing, but even more importantly, it was the relationships he built that he valued most. The stories and laughter carried him through many tough times and he appreciated each one of you.
Phill, Stacey, JJ, and Isaiah spent nearly all their time together. So much so, that the whole family shared Phill’s hobbies. He taught them to golf and started the Sjoberg Family golf tour, which took them to courses all around the state. They enjoyed watching football together and thanks to Phill, each one can draft and manage a highly competitive fantasy football team.
Phill’s ability to maintain his sense of humor during his fight with cancer was truly incredible. No one knew the extent of the pain he was feeling, but he always made those around him laugh, even at times it felt more natural to cry. He did this in an effort to shield loves ones, especially his boys, from the true nature of his fight.
It’s impossible to go through a journey like this without gaining some valuable perspective. Phill expressed many times throughout this battle that it was his family that kept him fighting. His intense love for his wife and children was truly unmatched. His place in their hearts will never leave or be replaced. His spirit will live on in everything they do because of how he loved them with the time he had on this earth.
His strength and courage throughout this fight has been an inspiration to many. He and his family are thankful to every angel here on earth that helped along the way. Please know that he’ll be repaying your kindness by being an angel that watches over you.
In lieu of flowers, our family asks that you consider a memorial donation made to JJ and Isaiah through their GoFundMe https://gofund.me/95da779a or to the family’s favorite non-profit organization Tracy’s Sanctuary House https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=4HQSHVGKU5EZC
