Pauline was born September 16, 1927, near Shields, ND, to Louie and Aurora (Ternes) Koch. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Carson, graduating from Carson High School in 1944. On October 6, 1949, Pauline married the love of her life, Joseph Roll, at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church near Raleigh. The two made their home in Carson for a short while before moving to the farm south of Heil. Together they raised their family of 21 children.
Pauline loved spending time in her garden and tending to her beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting doilies, and sewing which included most of her children’s clothing. She also enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends. Everyone was invited to Pauline’s table because “what’s one more?”. The holidays and family gatherings were a special time for her and her family. Pauline was a devout Catholic her entire life, prayer and the Rosary were of such importance to her life. She was given the key to the church because everyone knew she could be relied upon to be there.
