Born on December 12, 1919 to Gust and Mary (Stastny) Pesek, she attended a one-room school near their farm south of Mandan. On October 28, 1947, she married Henry Laubner and, soon after, they began building a farming/dairy operation on land purchased from Henry's parents. Henry passed away in 1966 due to a tractor accident. Even after this tragedy, Mary continued to be a true farmer at heart, expanding the farm with the help of her children. In 1988, she received the Outstanding Agriculturalist Award from North Dakota State University. Even when she moved to town in 1990, she always said, "There is nothing better than digging in the dirt!"
Mary was resilient, determined, hardworking, and 100% dedicated to her family. She will always be remembered for her delicious kolaches and apple bars, for the beautiful quilts she made for each family member, and for her love of fishing, always trying to catch the BIG ONE! Her home was open 24/7 for anyone who needed a place to stay and was the location for many memorable holiday traditions. Mary was a lifetime member of the ZCBJ Lodge and enjoyed many activities at the Bohemian Hall.
Mary will be missed by her children Marlene (Dick) Schmidt, Janice (Rod) Fischer, Lorraine (Al) Schmidt, Larry (Elaine) Laubner, and Marion (Glen) Roshau, as well as her grandchildren Janel (Glenn) Gray, David (Brenda) Schmidt, Gregg (Cloris) Schmidt, Derek Fischer, Misty (Nate) Gage, Brian (Delora) Schmidt, Mike (Jessica) Schmidt, Lori (Albie) Boognl, Natalie (Ben) Tokach, Ashlee (fiancé Reid) Laubner, Angela (Trevor) Ernst, Jessica (Jesse) Hentges, Casey (Tiffany) Roshau, Kelly (Courtney) Roshau, Jennifer (Austin) Porter, and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Laubner; her brother, Eddie Pesek; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Agnes and Elmer Mattson, Rose and Everett Mattson, Adeline and Lawrence Laubner; her niece, Betty Mattson, her nephew, August (Sonny) Mattson, and her niece's husband, Tom Weinberger.
Special thanks to the many wonderful caregivers, friends and neighbors who were there to lend a helping hand when needed. Your kindness and thoughtfulness will always be remembered.
