Mary Vogel Carrick passed away October 12, 2013 at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, at age 69. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 am on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.
Mary was the quintessential wife, mother and grandmother: loving, deeply involved, gracious, kind and caring. Her family was the center of her life – husband Ron and children William ("Bill") and Ann. Bill and wife Kristin Hill live in Seattle, and Ann and husband Jason Kirchmeier live in Mandan with their children – Ron and Mary’s beloved grandchildren – Cambelle and Sage Kirchmeier, ages 11 and 7.
Mary's parents Robert and Elsa Vogel died in 2005 and 2009, and her youngest brother Robert Lee ("Bobby") Vogel in November 2012. She is survived by her husband, children and grandchildren; sister, Sarah Vogel (Rudra Tamm) and brother, Frank Vogel (Melanie Vogel). She is also survived by two nephews and one niece, Will Vogel (Gabrielle), Andrew Gold (Orkhon Zorigoo), Lara Vogel (Louis Dorval), and by five great nieces and nephews, Tsenguun Orkhon, John Vogel, Grace Vogel, Alexander Gold and Oscar Dorval.
Born on May 11, 1944 to Robert and Elsa Vogel, Mary grew up in Garrison until age 10. The family then moved to Fargo, where she attended public school through 11th grade. In 1961, they moved to Mandan, where she graduated from high school in 1962. Soon after she met Ron Carrick, with whom she spent the rest of her life. She studied both at UND and Northwestern University, completing her degree in education at UND. After Ron and she were married in 1965, they lived in Chicago and San Francisco before moving to Mandan in 1974.
Mary had two careers. First, she was a patient and caring teacher to many hundreds of students at school systems in California and North Dakota. At Mandan High School, from which she retired in 2001, she helped many students overcome obstacles in order to graduate. Many of these students credit their degrees to her caring guidance. In her second career, she worked with Ron at the business they started in 1996, Classic Yard Lawn and Garden Center. She worked evenings and weekends at Classic Yard until retiring from her teaching career. The day after retiring she began work full time, working until 2008 when Ron and Mary retired and the business closed. During her time at Classic Yard, Mary provided gentle guidance to thousands of people, helping them to make their yards, homes and lives more beautiful and making many friends in the process.
After retiring Mary and Ron focused on family (especially their granddaughters), friends (including memorable “movie nights”), reading (Mary was never without a book at hand), book clubs, and travel with friends and family. These activities were cut short by a diagnosis of cancer in July, for which Mary and Ron arranged treatment in Seattle where they stayed with their son Bill and his wife Kristin. Despite the best of care by Ron, Bill, Kristin, Ann and a team of medical professionals at the University of Washington Medical Center, Mary passed away on October 12 with her family at her side.
From childhood to her very last day, Mary was a person of outstanding kindness, compassion, optimism, and sunny, even temper. She did not promote herself or her accomplishments, but she excelled at all that she did, including her roles as wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers (which Mary adored during her life), please consider a gift in her memory to Mandan Public Schools Foundation for Education.
