Lyle was born on February 27, 1932 in Mandan, ND to Lyle L. and Irene (Simonson) Dawson of St. Anthony, ND. Lyle attended school in Mandan and then went on to graduate from NDAC, which later became NDSU, with a BS degree in agriculture and a MA degree in agronomy. He was a member of the FarmHouse Fraternity. He also attended Taylor University in Marion, IN. He met Nancy Kaiser of Fargo and they were married on September 2, 1955. They raised four children Laurie J. Bohrer, Margaret A. (Glenn) Park, Corey C. (Christie) Dawson, and Timothy J. (Kathy) Dawson.

Lyle worked for a short time as Barnes County Agent before returning home because of a family emergency to manage Oak Coulee Ranch near St. Anthony, ND and to teach in the Flasher school system. Later he moved to the Ft. Rice vicinity and managed the historic Cannonball Ranch. He went back to the Oak Coulee ranch and carried on the family interest in the Angus cattle breed while exploring the attributes of the Simmental breed, and later the Gelbvieh breed. He also owned Dawson Trucking, worked at the North Dakota Livestock Division and at Kist Livestock Auction. After he retired from cattle ranching, he bred quarter horses. He was a cowboy who enjoyed riding horse and team penning.

He served in many leadership positions in the Rural United Methodist Church, Young Life, North Dakota Stockmen’s Association, Farm Bureau, and North Dakota Angus Association. He served on the Agronomy Seed Farm Council and the Morton County Weed Control Board. He was elected to the Mandan School Board and to two terms in the ND House of Representatives.

Lyle will be deeply missed by his children and 10 grandchildren: Matthew (Sara) and his great grandchildren Payton and Nora Bohrer, Michael (Kelly) Bohrer, and Nick Bohrer (fiancée, Adrianna Harris); Jeremy, Emily, Abigail, Zoey and Karli Dawson; Lindsy and Gabriel Dawson; sister, Louise, Juneau, AK and many friends.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Loretta; brother, John and son-in-law, Byron Bohrer.

Memorials may be directed toward Young Life, the American Heart Association, and Child’s Hope Learning Center.
