Liborius Nicholas Schmidt, 96, Mandan passed away December 11, 2024 at the Augusta Place Care Center in Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 16, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Fr. Josh Waltz as celebrant. Burial will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at 12 PM.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 15, 2024 from 5-7 PM, with Parish Rosary and Vigil Service at 7 PM at Weigel Funeral Home.
Liborius was born February 16, 1928 in Fallon ND to Monson K. Schmidt and Anna (Friesz) Schmidt. He was the third of eleven children. He was educated in Fallon through the eighth grade where he walked one mile to school with his siblings uphill both ways. He earned his GED from Mandan High School in 1971, which he was very proud of.
Liborius enlisted in the US ARMY on November 29, 1950 and served in COMBAT-KOREA 1st Calvary, Artillery until discharged on August 28, 1952.
On June 26, 1954 Liborius married the love of his life Patricia A. Gerhardt at St. Joseph’s Church in Mandan. He started employment in 1954 with the Northern Pacific Railroad and lived in various towns in North Dakota, ultimately settling in Mandan. He worked for the railroad for 36 years and retired in 1990.
Liborius was a handyman and loved to fix things. He was a great gardener. He enjoyed putting puzzle’s together, playing cards and games with his family and friends. He was a jokester and would tell jokes to whoever would listen to them.
He is survived by his sons, Mark (Charlotte) Schmidt, Mandan, William (Tammy) Schmidt, Bismarck, Joseph Schmidt, Jamestown, James Schmidt, Tampa FL; daughter Mary Lou (Chad) Thompson, Bismarck; grandchildren, Travis (Casey) Schmidt, Preston (Megan) Schmidt, Tiffany (Justin) Otto, and Ashley Schmidt; great grandchildren, Ryder Schmidt, Noah Schmidt, Bennett Schmidt, Rian Schmidt, Ella Schmidt, Maverick Otto, Tennessee Otto, Finley Otto, Stella Hauser, and Jaxson Hedstrom and sister Evina Ott.
Liborius was preceded in death by his parents, wife Patricia, brothers Leo, Lawrence, Leonard, Louis, Linus, Larry Schmidt, and sisters Hildegard Paul, Rosemary Paul and Judy Schmidt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Mandan or Good Samaritan Augusta Place Care Center Bismarck.
