Leo J. Schweigert was born February 19, 1920 in Mandan to Matt and Rose (Messmer) Schweigert. Raised and educated in Mandan, he graduated from Mandan High School in 1938. After high school, Leo went to UND on a football scholarship. He returned to Mandan to work at the Mandan Dental Lab as a Dental Technician. Before the war, he enlisted in the Army National Guard, transitioning to the Navy and eventually to the Army where he proudly served in WWII. Upon returning from the military, he went back to work for Mandan Dental Lab where he met the love of his life, dental assistant, Clementine Geiss. On August 5, 1948, Leo and Clem were joined in marriage at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan. Together they made their home in Mandan where he was a volunteer fireman for over 30 years. Leo was an avid hunter and fisherman. He looked forward to hunting trips to the Badlands every year, even shooting a deer at the age of 80. Watching tennis and football on TV were other things Leo enjoyed. He was a proud member of both the Elks and Legion Club for many years. Dogs were also a passion of Leo’s. He was considered a bit of a dog whisperer always having a milk bone in his pocket.

Leo will be deeply missed by his daughters, Linda (Gene) O’Neill, Mandan; and LeeAnn (Steve) Tillotson, Bismarck; son, Michael Schweigert, Mandan; grandchildren, Erin (Arik) Moe, Mill Creek, WA; Abby Tillotson, Bismarck; great-grandchild, Finnegan Moe, Mill Creek, WA and numerous nieces and nephews.
