Leander J. Zins Jr., 84, New Leipzig, ND passed away Saturday, January 11, 2025 at St. Luke’s Care Center in Dickinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, January 17 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church with Fr. Keith Streifel presiding with burial following at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16 from 5-7 PM with Rosary and Vigil service at 7 PM at Buehler Larson Funeral Home in Mandan and will continue one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Lee was born July 25, 1940 at the Flasher Hospital in Flasher, ND to Leander Sr. and Ann (Hoff) Zins. Lee went to Leahy country school until the 8th grade. He then went on to St. Mary’s High School in Bismarck for three years before transferring to Crosier Seminary in Minnesota. Lee finished two years of seminary before joining the United States Army. After being honorably discharged from the US Army, Lee went to work for IBM in Hunstville, AL in 1966. He later moved to Virginia where he continued work for IBM and started a hobby farm. Upon retirement from IBM, he continued with his hobby farm in VA until he moved to a farm near New Leipzig, ND where he lived for around 10 years before moving to St. Luke’s Care Center in Dickinson.
Lee loved working on his farm and his John Deere tractors. He also enjoyed fishing and watching baseball and football where he would cheer on his Washington Nationals and Washington Commanders.
He is survived by his sisters: Mary Ann Paluck, Dickinson; Kathy Zins, Anchorage, AK; Jeanette Bock, Mandan; Pauline (Jerry) Hirning, Zimmerman, MN; Irene (Mike) Voth, St. Cloud, MN; Patty (Cliff) Nelson, Mandan; Dorothy (Jerry) Beaudoin, West Fargo; Elaine Byrd, Union City, CA; Rosie Odegard, Gwinner; Leah Zins, Hopkins, MN; Christine (Kevin) Condelario, Casper, WY; brothers: John (Bonnie) Zins, Flasher; Fr. Charles Zins, Green Valley, AZ; Adam (Jill) Zins, Greenfield, IN; Florian (Judy) Zins, Flasher; sister-in-law Marilyn Zins, Bismarck and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edward (Marilyn) Zins, nephew, Doug Renfrow, niece, Charlotte Pray and two brothers-in-law, Elroy Odegard and Ray Paluck.
