Joseph “Joe” Wingenbach, 93, Bismarck, died January 11, 2014 at Sanford Health in Bismarck.

The Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, January 16 at 10:30 am at Christ the King Catholic Church in Mandan with Rev. Johnson Kuriappilly as presider.

Joe was born May 22, 1920 the son of Anselm and Deonila (Braun) Wingenbach near Brisbane, North Dakota. He grew up in the Carson area and attended a country school receiving an eighth grade education. He helped with the family farm until entering military service in 1942. Due to the death of his father, Joe’s military involvement ended with an Honorable Discharge.

Joe married Eva Zins on June 14, 1949 at St. Gertrude’s Church, Raleigh, ND. Together, they started farming south of Carson, near the Cannonball River. They practiced diversified farming raising registered Shorthorn cattle and Yorkshire hogs. They also started a dairy operation which eventually was known as the Cannonball Dairy. Joe and Eva later retired in Mandan.

Joe enjoyed visiting with people; no one was a stranger. He always had a smile and a story. He only saw the good in others. Family was important to him. He always affirmed their gifts and encouraged them to use their talents. Pursuing an education and having faith in God were priorities instilled in the Wingenbach family.

Although he only completed the eighth grade, he continued with an informal education reading books, magazines and newspapers covering every topic from religion to mechanics, science, history and politics. With academic aptitude, Joe mastered the craft of taxidermy and was a pioneer of irrigation practices on the Cannonball River.

Joe also appreciated music. He taught himself to play the harmonica and the accordion. Joe played for house parties and wedding dances in Brisbane and the surrounding area.
Some of Joe’s other interests included horseshoe pitching. His expertise paid off, winning numerous trophies at various horseshoe tournaments throughout the upper Midwest, culminating in winning the World Horseshoe Championship Elders Class F in Spearfish, SD in 1993.

Joe’s involvement in civic and church affairs was evident throughout Grant County. He was elected to serve on the Jacobson Memorial Hospital Board of Directors as well as on the ASCS and Farm Bureau Boards. He also served on the St. Theresa Parish Council in Carson. Joe was instrumental in the formation of the Cannonball Roughrider 4-H Club and served many years as its leader. Joe was recognized as the Grant County recipient of the Harvest Bowl award from NDSU which recognizes the success, dedication and hard work of outstanding agriculturists.
Joe is survived by his wife, Eva and 8 children; daughters, Janice (Stephen) Wood, Billings, MT; Marilyn (Mark) Stumpf, Gloria (Tim) Wanner, and JoAnn (Travis) Coyle, all from Mandan; sons, Jim (Bonnie), West Fargo; Dave (Beth), Minatare, NE; Ken (Carol), and Ron (Mary), both from Bismarck; 31 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and his brother Emil (Florence), Bismarck.

Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Regina Nagel; his son, Adam and daughter, Bette.
