Joseph was born February 10, 1932, in Flasher, the fifth of 13 children to Carl and Lucy (Heck) Berger. He was raised and educated in Flasher. He then worked alongside his Dad on the family farm, southeast of Flasher. On June 10, 1963, Joseph married Linda Morrell in St. Anthony. He took over the family operation in 1966, and continued to farm and ranch as well as operate the dairy. Joseph and Linda raised their nine children on the farm, retiring in 1997. In 2000 they moved to Mandan.
Joe's faith was at the center of his life. He was baptized and confirmed in Flasher and was an active member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and most recently Christ the King Catholic Church. Joe served as a communion minister for many years in Flasher and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Following his retirement from farming, Joseph still enjoyed going back to the farm to help his son, Don, stack round bales. Joseph also enjoyed snowmobiling and playing cards with family and friends, always up for a game of Whist or Rummy.
