Joseph “Joe” Markel, Jr., 62, Mandan, died August 24, 2015 at Sanford Health in Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, August 28, 2015 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Nick Schneider as celebrant. Burial will be at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the AMVETS Post #9 of Bismarck.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 27, 2015 from 3:00-9:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 pm. There will be viewing at the funeral home Thursday only.
Joe was born on November 13, 1952, the son of Joe Markel, Sr. and Maggie Friedt. He was raised and educated in Mandan. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Pensacola, Florida.
Joe married Margie Kary on July 16, 1971. After he returned from the Navy, Joe and Margie made their home in Mandan where they raised their two children, Shawn and Becky. Joe and Margie own and operate MJM Grounds Maintenance and Old Red Trail Storage.
Joe enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and playing cards. But his greatest joy was spending time with his granddaughters, Gianna and Kaelyn, whom he adored.
In 2006 Joe suffered a stroke which caused him to lose his eyesight. But he never lost his wit and humor. He would tell the funniest stories about his fishing, hunting and camping trips. Joe will be remembered for the love he had for his family, making people laugh, being quite a handyman and always lending a helping hand when needed.
He will be deeply missed by his friends and family, he is survived by his wife, Margie; his children, Shawn, Bismarck and Becky (Chris) Serio, Frederick, MD; granddaughters, Gianna & Kaelyn Serio, Frederick, MD; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette (Francis) Ehli, Bismarck, ND, Elizabeth Flowers, Bismarck, ND, Kathy (Mark) Benesh, Bismarck and Rosie (Jim) Crumley, Parsons, KS; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Larry (Jeri) Kary, Scottsdale, AZ, LeRoy (Shirley) Kary, Bismarck, ND, Marv (Edie) Kary, Mandan, ND Ken (Deanna) Kary, Toomsuba, MS and Marie Kary, New York along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Maggie Markel; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Rose Kary and brother-in-law, Robert Flowers.
