Joseph Eckroth

Joseph Eckroth, 88, Mandan, passed away October 4, 2016 at his residence in Mandan.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, October 7, 2016 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Msgr. Chad Gion as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 5:00-8:00 pm at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Joseph was born on June 14, 1928 to Peter and Katherine (Pfaff) Eckroth in Mandan, ND. He was raised and educated in Fallon, ND but attended Junior High in Mandan. He also served as an altar boy at St. Joseph Catholic Church along with his brother Tommy. At the young age of 19 was sent to take over the farm and took the responsibility very seriously. He married Kathryn Doll on February 1, 1954 in Fallon, ND. They farmed for a number of years before moving to Mandan in 1972.
Joe managed 2 gas stations in Mandan. He was very particular about his lawn which he mowed like he farmed all in straight rows. He would also take great pride in his automobiles especially Chevrolets, they were his pride and joy, and they were always very clean. He enjoyed playing accordion like his brother George. Joe was an avid Vikings fan and in 1997 he got the opportunity to attend a Vikings game, the look of awe on his face told the whole story it was one of the highlights of his life. Joe's brothers-in-law, Joe Schlinger and George Bohl died at a young age and Joe became a surrogate father for his nephews. Above all his family was the focal point of his life and he enjoyed the time spent with his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
Joe will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Kathryn, Mandan, ND; daughters, Lola (Robin) Lee, Kay (Maury) Kamins, Donna (Greg) Pfleger all of Bismarck, ND. Karen (Bruce) Fleck and Patty (Doug) Geiger both of Mandan, ND; sons, Randy (Cindi), Bismarck, ND, Allan (Bridget), Grand Forks, ND and Bernie (Rae), Mandan, ND; 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sharon Eckroth, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandchild, Katelyn Lee; sisters, Ida (Joe) Leingang, Barbara (George) Bohl, Rosie Eckroth, Isabelle (Leo) Frank and Minnie (Joe) Schlinger; brothers, George (Monica), Tom and 2 infant brothers.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.
