Joe was born on September 8, 1924 to John and Margaret (Dinnus) Doll in Otter Creek, ND. He was raised and educated in the area attending Otter Creek Country School. Joe married Helen Zander on January 21, 1946 in St. Vincent. Together Helen and Joe were farmers and ranchers in the New Salem area.
Joe was a hardworking and industrious man who loved the rancher's way of life. In 1959 he started breeding Charolais Cattle and in 1969 he started breeding Simmental Cattle. Joe was also a partner in D&K Farm Equipment and a feed and seed dealer. He and Helen traveled to many cattle sales and shows throughout the country with their friends, Delbert and Irene Krumwedie.
Joe was very civic minded, he was a member of St. Vincent Verein and St. Pius Catholic Church Board, 2 Cylinder Club and the New Salem School Board. He was also on the Charolais and Simmental Cattle Board. He enjoyed collecting John Deere Tractors both toy sized and working tractors, playing pinochle, dancing polka and waltzes with Helen and hunting and fishing.
