John E. Olheiser, 90, Mandan, passed away Monday, February 19, 2024, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 23 at 10:30 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church in Mandan with Fr. Fred Harvey officiating. Burial of cremains will follow at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 22 from 5-7 PM with a Rosary/Vigil service at 7 PM at Weigel Funeral Home in Mandan.
John was born November 30, 1933, in Flasher, ND to Martin and Emily (Friesz) Olheiser. At a young age his family moved to Glen Ullin where he was raised. In 1950 he moved to Mandan, where he worked at the Red Owl Grocery Store. From there he got a job at Purity Dairy until January 1953 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD. He was attached to the 54th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. He worked with radar-controlled missiles. He was honorably discharged in December of 1956. In April,1957 he went to work at Mandan Standard Oil Refinery where he worked until retirement in June 1990.
John was an avid fisherman, whether on the Missouri River or Lake Sakakawea he cherished his time fishing. He took many bus tours, traveling to Washington D.C. and Branson, MO among others. He enjoyed watching the Price Is Right and Walker, Texas Ranger. John was also rarely found without some candy in his hand!
He married Wilma Geiger on November 22, 1955. From that union he had five children: Sandy (Keith) Miller, Dennis (Gloria) Olheiser, James Olheiser, Sharon Olheiser (Special friend, Paul) and Richard (Val) Olheiser. John is also survived by his sister, Florence Adams, his special friend, Eileen Krumm and former wife, Wilma (Leo) Baumgartner, grandchildren: Christopher Miller, Keenan (Lisa), Elisha (Mike), John (Nicole) Olheiser, Amber Goetz, Alyssa Olheiser, step-grandchildren: Andrew, Amber, Ashley and Andrea (Kenneth); great-grandchildren: Marcus Miller, Maddy Goetz, Indy Miller and Bennet Olheiser and step great-grandchildren: Alyse, Kylie, Kara, Willow, Jemma, Brayden, Emeree and Arion and last but not least his buddy, Shelby the pitbull.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Emily, Father, Martin, Stepfather, Peter Helbling and a grandson, Allen Olheiser
