James was born to Ted and Ann (Bacher) Schultz on September 22, 1936 in Fort Rice where he was raised, educated and ranched. On May 31, 1965 he married Sharon Maczkowicz. They ranched together and raised their family until his retirement in 1980. The love and appreciation of nature was evident in his focus of everyday life. A determined hard worker as a rancher at a time when many of today’s conveniences were not available, this required hard physical labor. He was a perfectionist; this was always displayed whether on the ranch or in his weed free yard and garden. Even with his well-deserved retirement, he was an avid fisherman on the Missouri, a skilled hunter of pheasant, grouse and deer was on his list of priorities. His focus as a hunter was to acquire a trophy non-typical buck.
His great memory for details served him well as a talented story teller. Above all his family was central throughout his life. He always looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These memories of James will be a part of all who knew him as an example as we go on with our lives.
James will be deeply missed by his wife of 53 years, Sharon; daughter, Lori (Nolan) Ternes of Stanton, ND; sons, Wade (Tina) of St. Mary’s ID, Scott (Doneta) of Mandan; 7 grandchildren, Laura, Ashley, Elias, Tiffany, James, Noah and Wendy; 5 great-grandchildren, Lacie, Gage, Ryder, Jaxton and Riley; sisters-in-law, Marlene Schultz of Wolf Point, MT and Sally Schultz of Mandan.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alvin (Katheryn), Harold and Fred; sisters, Vivian (Leonard) Helfrich and Betty Dillon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
