James "Jim" L. Niess

James Larry Niess, age 58, passed away on November 19, 2024, at Sanford Health in Bismarck.

He was the firstborn child of Calvin and Linda Niess on March 18, 1966, in Mandan. Five years later to the date, on March 18,1971, he became a big brother to Joyce and forever had to share his birthday with his little Squirt. 

He worked at Seven Seas Restaurant in Mandan for several years and proceeded to work for Cloverdale of Mandan for 28 years. His most recent employment was at Rolling Hills Restaurant, west of Mandan. 

James truly lived a life to the fullest through simple pleasures and kindness. He enjoyed collecting rocks, hunting and fishing, finding antiques, and listening to music. Most of all he enjoyed just talking with friends and family whenever the opportunity arrived. He especially had close friendships with Todd Kramer and Desmond Shinn. 

James’s silly sense of humor, his gentle strength and his unwavering kindness will be greatly missed by his parents, Calvin and Linda Niess of Mandan; sister, Joyce (Larry) McLellan of Mandan; two nieces and one nephew, and many family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents George & Vlasta Wright, his great aunt Josephine Zuelich, and aunt Vivian Fisher.
