James Bender

July 27, 1938 — November 27, 2014

James A. “Jim” Bender, 76, Mandan, died November 27, 2014 at Sanford Health Care Systems in Bismarck.

Jim was born on July 27, 1938 to Martin and Katherine (Renner) Bender in Mandan, ND. He was raised and educated in the St. Anthony area and later served in the United States Army from which he was honorably discharged. Upon returning to ND, Jim met and later married Joann Goertel on September 10, 1966 in St. Anthony. The couple made their home in the Mandan area where Jim worked as a mechanic at Twin City Implement and then as an auto mechanic at Norby-Rath Ford and Bill Barth Ford.

His greatest pride was his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a humble man, who did not seek out the limelight, yet willingly helped his community and friends in whatever way he was needed. His generosity and kindness will be missed by many. Jim was known as the “Rotor-Tilling Guy”, tilling for neighbors and friends every spring and fall for 30 years. He was also an avid hunter and spent many hours in the pursuit of game including pheasants and deer.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Joann, Mandan, ND; sons, Jason (Lisa) Woodbury, MN and John (Krista), Middletown, CT; grandchildren, Isaac, Andrew, Erik and Adam; sisters, Patricia (Tony) Kautzman, Mandan, ND and Sherry Bender, St. Anthony, ND; brothers, Leslie-Richard Bender, Maple Grove, MN, Charles (Gladnie) Bender, Yucaipa, CA and Dennis (Marlene) Bender, Mandan, surviving aunts Louise Hatzenbihler, Margaret Renner, Isabelle Renner and surviving uncle Ted (Marie) Renner along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father in- law Steve and Dorothy Goertel, sisters-in-law, Barbara Jean Bender and Donna Schmidt.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Shane Campbell as celebrant. Burial will be at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Mandan VFW Post #70 and American Legion Post #40.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2014 from 3:00-8:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
