Hildegarde Leingang was born at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND on September 16, 1932 to Joseph and Rose Leingang. She was raised on a farm west of St. Anthony and attended country school through 8th grade.
In 1951 she met Christ Hatzenbuhler and within two weeks he went off to serve in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Hildi and Christ exchanged letters for the next two years. They married on October 20, 1953. They farmed until 1956 when they moved to Mandan. They raised 4 children.
Hildi lived and loved fully. She passed her driver’s test at age 40 so she started her own painting and staining business. Christ often said “Hildi was the strong one” as she held things together through his many surgeries and long hospital stays, especially following a major house fire in 1972.
During their 62 years of marriage, she was always eager to have family and friends around. Guests were encouraged to “have a little more” as she was fond of saying. Fridays and Saturdays you were likely to find them on a dance floor. They enjoyed traveling to Europe, on many cruises, and to 47 states including Hawaii and Alaska.
Of all the things she enjoyed, the most important was always her family. Mom was happiest when her children were happy; when they hurt she took their pain.
She is survived by her husband Christ and four children Elaine (Valdie) Magstadt, Lynn (Jim) Helferich, Randy (Laurie) Hatzenbuhler, Chris (Lynne) Hatzenbuhler, twelve grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by each of her six siblings and parents.
