Helen Kahl, 92, Bismarck, died February 14, 2016 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 pm on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Ed Wehner as celebrant and Rev. Frank Schuster as concelebrant. Burial will be at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 17, 2016 from 3:00-8:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Helen was born on January 1, 1924 to Daniel and Scholastica (Volk) Dirk in Raleigh, ND. She was raised and educated in Raleigh. Helen married Zachaus Kahl on October 30, 1944 along with her brother and sister-in-law, Rasmus and Emma Dirk at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church in Raleigh. Zachaus died on June 7, 1995.
Helen was a woman of strong faith and values. She never skipped her daily devotion. Her family and her faith were always at the center of her life. Helen had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. Her work ethic was strong and she instilled it in her children. She worked on the farm along with her brothers no matter how physical the chore. She was a wonderful cook and loved to bake, occasionally treating all the children on the school bus with donuts. One of her favorite past times was gardening and her flower beds were admired by many. Helen enjoyed playing games and cards and loved square dancing and her yearly birthday celebrations with her family.
Helen will be deeply missed by daughters, Debrah (Bill) Momblow, Eagle River, AK, Brenda (Roger) Mosset, Spearfish, SD and Karla (John) Klein, Washburn, ND; sons, Jago (Nancy) Kahl, Rapid City, SD, Art (Tracy) Kahl, Rifle, CO, Frank Kahl, Rapid City, SD, Lorin (Anna) Kahl, Dickinson, ND, Michael (Delores) Kahl, Bismarck, ND, Steve (Candace) Kahl, Gillette, WY and Stan (LeAnn) Kahl, Bismarck, ND; 32 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren; sister, Edith Lehner, Spring City, PA; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Dirk, Bismarck, ND and Leona Dirk, Fargo, ND along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Zachaus; son, Terry Kahl; grandson, Brian Kahl; great-granddaughter, Brittyn Mosset; sisters, Katheryn (Casper) Schwalick, Refina Dirk and Lydia (Paul) Brown; brothers, Joe (Flora) Dirk, Emanuel (Monica) Dirk, Tony (Marie) Dirk, Arsenius Dirk, Rasmus (Emma) Dirk and Mike Dirk and brother-in-law, George Lehner.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
