Helen M. Fried, 87, Selfridge, ND met her Heavenly Father January 4, 2016 at the Selby, SD Nursing Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am CT on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at St. Philomena Catholic Church, Selfridge, ND with Father Basil Atwell as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Philomena Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm CT on Friday, January 8, 2016 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, ND. Rosary/Parish Vigil will follow at 7pm CT. Visitation will continue at the Church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Helen was born on January 20, 1928 to John and Helen (Sauber) Simons in Vayland, SD. Helen had 6 brothers; Vincent, Louis, Bernard, Hubert, John and Pete. The family moved to Edgemont, SD when Helen was 8 months old and then moved to a ranch when she was 2. Helen attended country school thru 6th grade. She graduated from St. Agnes Academy in Alliance, NE.
Helen married Albert Fried on February 9, 1948 at St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont, SD. They lived on a farm near Meadow, SD for 5 years then purchased a farm near Selfridge, ND in 1953. They resided on the farm until 2005 when Albert went to the Mott Nursing Home. She then moved to Mott to be near him. When Albert passed away in March 2009, She moved back to the farm. Helen moved to the Selby Nursing Home in November 2015.
Helen's life was her strong faith, family and home. She was a very outgoing and social person. She enjoyed visiting with her friends and family. She was involved in Homemaker's Club, St. Philomena Altar Society and her children's school activities. Helen enjoyed playing the organ at family gatherings. Her hobbies included; baking/cooking, canning, gardening and sewing. She also enjoyed riding bike with her children. Her pets offered her great companionship in her later years.
Helen was a loving and compassionate mother to her 9 children. She will be forever loved and missed by all who knew her, including; 3 daughters, Kathy Schantz, Bismarck, Patricia Fried-Hill, and Carmen (Mark) Walker, Grand Forks; 6 sons, Dennis, Mike (Michelle), Curtis, all of Selfridge, Bob (Mavis), Bismarck, Bryan (deceased) and Bernard (Melva), Spring Branch, TX; 7 grandchildren, Tina Schantz, Kent Schantz, Crystal Tan, Scott Fried, Dan Fried, Bridget Hill and Landon Walker; and 7 great-grandchildren; Skyler, Sterling, Trenton, Tanner, Pearle, Alexis and Ava.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Albert, son Bryan, parents, and brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Philomena Catholic Church Building Fund or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
