After four years, he was honorably discharged and retuned to Montana to further his education. He received his BS degree in Agricultural Science with a Major in Soils and in 1954 his Master Degree in Soil Science from Montana State University. He was united in marriage to Virginia M. Baum on October 26, 1952 at Worden, Montana. George had an inquisitive and analytical mind which paired naturally for him as a Soil Research Scientist. He and Virginia moved to Mandan in 1955 and he worked for the US Department of Agriculture at the Northern Great Plains Research Center until his retirement in 1999.

He belonged to the Mandan Rotary, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was a charter member of the ND State Railroad Museum where he was inducted into the North Dakota State Railroad Museum Hall of Fame on August 23, 2009. In all of these organizations, his involvement always saw George as an officer, giving of his time and talents to further the cause and purpose. His dedication to his church was foremost in serving on many boards at all levels locally as well as the National Presbyterian Association. He and Virginia did take time to relax and enjoy a favorite pastime with friends in the Family Campers RV’s and the Good Sam Club as well as spending time with each other throughout their many world travels.

He was a collector of information of various interest in coins, stamps and an archiver of scientific information, much of it related to his work. He was known as the Bingo king and played a good game of cards, pinnocle. His dry sense of humor was usually present and was willing to try anything. His thirst for learning was constant and his creativity resulting in the gadgets he created to make projects easier to complete, making a better mouse trap.
