Florence was born on April 7, 1925 to Peter and Florence (Erhardt) Markel at Judson, ND. As a young woman she moved with her family to a farm near the Crown Butte, ND area and later moved to the rural St. Anthony, ND area. Florence being one of the older children took on the many responsibilities of family life on the farm. She and Jack R. Schaaf were united in marriage on November 12, 1945 in St. Anthony, ND. After their marriage they lived on the family farm where they farmed with Jack’s parents until 1952 when she and Jack moved to Mandan, ND.
Florence learned at an early age the tasks of creating a home for her family. She enjoyed many social events with friends and family. Always a high point were extended family gatherings, which included preparing many German recipes and playing cards. She appreciated nature, spending many hours in her garden and canning the produce. She was fond of old time music and especially dancing to polkas and waltzes. Several trips, whether by air, train or auto to Seattle and Tacoma to visit family were adventures she loved. This woman of kindness and hospitality sprinkled with a sense of humor and a strong faith will be cherished by all who knew her and especially by her family.
