Erlis B. Paulson was born January 2, 1943 in Bowman to Olaf and Eleanor (Rolland) Paulson. She was raised and educated in Bowman, graduating from Bowman High. On October 5, 1963, Erlis married Norris Chase. They were blessed with three children, Denise, Leanne and Don. Erlis was the owner/operator of the Music Box store in Bowman as well as the Executive Secretary for the ND Newspaper Association. She married Darrel Swenson on June 18, 1987 in Grand Forks. Making her career in banking, Erlis retired from Alerus Financial in 2008 after 20 years of service.
Erlis was a woman who had a strong will, witty sense of humor and this was evident throughout her struggle with her illness, which she did without a complaint and yet with a positive attitude. She was a skilled painter who liked nature scenes. She was an avid reader and could be found reading books with a Diet Pepsi by her side. Erlis enjoyed watching TV, her favorites being Matlock and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and above all a dedicated Minnesota Twins fan. She also had a beautiful collection of snow globes. While living in Bowman, Erlis was an active member of the community performing in musicals and joining bowling leagues. Family was central in her life, most of all Darrel, the love of her life, at her side.
