Eileen J. Balkowitsch, 86, Bismarck, died January 9, 2014 at Sanford Health in Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Fr. Johnson Kuriappilly as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 12, 2014 from 3:00-8:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Rosary by Catholic Daughters at 4:30 pm, Parish Vigil at 5:00 pm followed by a ritual by Women of the Moose at 6:45 pm and a Rosary by Kenny Ressler at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Eileen was born on February 16, 1927 in Flasher to Jacob Bohl and Wilhelmina Paul. She was raised and educated in Flasher. Eileen moved to Mandan in 1942. She married Edward Balkowitsch on August 27, 1946 in Mandan. Eileen had a strong work ethic. Family was central in their life and they raised their children to have the same determination and work ethics as they did. Eileen loved family gatherings and enjoyed her family and friends. Many family activities included camping, fishing, and travel. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Eileen was an excellent cook specializing in homemade German recipes. They were all verbal recipes and she would always say “Enough flour until it is right.” She loved to travel with special vacations from 1960-1970 to California and Washington coast to visit relatives. She and also made senior bus trips to Niagara Falls and Branson, MO with her lady friends. Her hobbies included crochet-knitting, pinochle, crafts, reading, and bingo. Eileen was strong in her Catholic faith participating in Eagles Auxiliary, Women of the Moose, Golden Age Catholic Daughters, and Christian Mothers.
Eileen will be deeply missed by her daughter Carlotta (John) Birkbeck, Mandan; sons, Ronald (Marlys), Mandan, Delano (Lorene), Bismarck; sister, Rose Miller, Yakima, WA; grandchildren, Troy (Heather) Balkowitsch, Brandon (Nicole) Balkowitsch, Scott (Sarah) Birkbeck, Rebecca (Brandon) Bates, Angela Birkbeck (Nate Froseth), Rhonda (Abraham) Starck, Ashley Balkowitsch; great-grandchildren, Tate, Kadyn, Teegan, Jayda, and baby Balkowitsch in April.
Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, June 8, 1989; sisters, Anna (Frank) Hopfauf, Mary (John) Movich, Monica (Chuck) Taylor, Magdaline (Pat Huotte) Snodgrass, Barbara (Nick) Doll; brother-in-law, Tony Miller; brothers, Peter (Julia Bohl, Mike (Barbara) Bohl, Xavier (Rose) Bohl, George (Frances), Jacob (Ida) and Joseph (Hildegard).
