DuWayne “Zeke” Roger Zachmeier was born January 22, 1936, the only child to George and Dorothy (Lahren) Zachmeier in Mandan. He graduated from Mandan High School in 1955. On April 7, 1958, DuWayne married the love of his life, Vi Wagner, in Bismarck. He then enlisted in the US Army National Guard, serving for three years. In 1964, DuWayne and Vi built a home north of Mandan where they raised four children, Bryan, Deb, Mark, and Sue and shared 63 years together.
DuWayne worked at the Mandan Refinery for several years, before moving on to Bell and Howell in 1970. In 1984, he started Professional Microfilming (now called Datrue, Inc.). DuWayne and Vi worked many years together at Professional Microfilming until DuWayne’s retirement in 2000.
Above all, DuWayne cherished time and the memories made with his family. Later in life, he especially enjoyed attending his grandkids and great grandkids events. He had a passion for building model airplanes and amassed quite a collection over the years. DuWayne loved to golf and would always play with anyone who asked but was determined to get in as many games as possible with his good friend, Jim Heck. He also loved to fish and spend time at the lake with Vi.
DuWayne will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, Bryan Zachmeier of Tigard, OR and his children, Nick Zachmeier (fiancée, Brinnley Barthels) and Griffin Zachmeier; Deb (Richard) Irvine of Bismarck; Mark (Julie) Zachmeier of Mandan and their children, Courtney, Shelby, and Alyssa Zachmeier; and Sue (Steve) Berger of Dickinson and their children, Jorden Berger, Evan (Jenna) Berger and their children, Kashton and Kainan, Justin Berger (KayLeigh Malchose), Eric Berger; and his favorite brother-in-law, Bob (Dee “Chester”) Wagner along with his children, Greg (Lori) Wagner (son, Cameron) and Sandy (Steve) Clooten (children, Brooks and Grace).
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vi; parents, George and Dorothy; parents-in-law, Roy and Eleanor Wagner; and daughter-in-law, Liz Zachmeier.
The family sincerely thanks CHI Hospice, especially Grant Wilz, RN and the staff of Lasting Love Home Care, especially, Corey and Maria.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made out to CHI Hospice who took excellent care of Vi and DuWayne in their final days.
