Mandan

Funeral services for Delores Byrum will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Weigel Funeral Home in Mandan, with Chaplain Dan Sweeney officiating. Interment will follow in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Monday, July 29, 2024 at the funeral home with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 P.M.

Delores Ann (Salmen) Byrum, age 84, died July 25, 2024 at Miller Point, Mandan, N.D. 

Delores was born on January 11, 1940, in Mitchell, S.D. to Glenn and Gladys (Johnson) Salmen of White Lake, S.D. Delores was raised on her parents and grandparents farm north of White Lake. She attended Whittier Public School, graduating in 1957. She also attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls, S.D. 

Delores married Darrell Leon Byrum on July 20, 1958 at the rural Underwood Church of White Lake, S.D. Three children were born to this union: Kenneth Scott, Karen Ann, and Keith Leon. They lived in Huntsville, Alabama from 1958 to 1964 where Darrell served in the U.S. Army. They were transferred to Orleans, France in 1964 where they lived till 1966 when Darrell was transferred to Bismarck, N.D. They made their home in Mandan. Darrell was discharged from the army in 1969. They remained in Mandan where Darrell was employed by the State of North Dakota. Delores was employed by the Mandan Public School District for 25 years where she worked for the music and athletic departments. After retiring in 1997 Delores and Darrell enjoyed traveling and camping and being campground hosts. 

Delores was a member of the McCabe United Methodist Church of Bismarck and a former member of the Order of Eastern Star where she held many offices and served as Worthy Matron.

Delores’ hobbies were knitting – especially Christmas stockings and hats for newborn babies at Sanford Hospital; reading; crossword puzzles; sewing. Delores was an active volunteer with RSVP and volunteered for Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) for 7 years. Delores & Darrell enjoyed being campground hosts at various North Dakota State Parks for 17 years. Helping others gave her great enjoyment. 

Delores is survived by her husband Darrell; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Loren Schlecht (Medina, N.D.); one son, Keith (Mandan); two grandchildren, Lauren and Branden Byrum; 2 great-grandsons, Theo Greff (Mott), Kasen Haff (Mandan); her sister-in-law, Phyllis Salmen of Mitchell, S.D.; two nephews, Tim (Beth) Salmen, Madison, S.D. and Gordon (Jackie) Salmen, Madison, S.D.; cousin, Larry (Anne) McDowell of Ocean City, N.J.; and a host of treasured friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Don Salmen, one son Kenneth, in 1976, and a nephew, Robert Salmen.
