Darlene was born March 31, 1939, on the family farm in Saint Anthony, North Dakota, to Joseph and Regina (Launginer) Leingang. Darlene was raised and educated in St. Anthony. During that time, at a dance she met the love of her life Hilbert Hohbein. They were married in Mandan on September 16, 1958. Their love and marriage spanned 62 years.
After a brief time in Denver, Colorado, Darlene and Hilbert returned to Mandan, North Dakota, for work and to be near family. They raised two daughters, Kim and Laurie. Darlene worked at the Mandan Hospital in the neonatal ward as a nurse where her kindness and compassion touched countless lives. After retirement, Darlene worked full time raising her grandson, Levi, and doing her best to keep Hilbert off the car lots. Hilbert loved to haggle with car salesmen, which often resulted in him showing up with a surprise vehicle that was too big of a deal to pass up.
Darlene had an extraordinary ability to make those around her feel cherished. Her caring, selflessness, and deep concern for others made her a beloved friend and family member. She often spent her days chatting with friends and family over a cup of coffee.
Darlene and Hilbert were avid campers. Often their trips led them through Montana, down to the hot springs of Thermopolis, Wyoming, then over to Deadwood, South Dakota, and finally back home to Mandan. For many years they enjoyed time spent in the camper club with friends traveling around North Dakota. Darlene and Hilbert would team up with Bernadette, Darlene’s sister and best friend, and her husband Mike Schaff, and head to the casino. These trips made for countless memories filled with laughter and joy. Darlene was famous for being lucky, and as such she usually found her way home with a little more money than when she left.
Darlene’s legacy of love and kindness will live on through her family: daughter and son-in-law, Laurie (Tim) Meindinger; son-in-law, Dewey Kroh; grandsons, Levi Kom (Trista Rychklik), Ryan (Ciera) Kroh; great-grandchildren, Jack and Sam Kom, Alora, Kal, and Cameron Kroh; sister and brother-in-law, Bernadette (Mike) Schaff; brother in-law and sister in-law, Sid (Dixie) Hohbein and Glenese (Jerry) Lauinger.
Darlene is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Regina Leingang; husband, Hilbert Hohbein; daughter, Kim Kroh; and her brothers and sisters, Irene (Dan) Eckroth, Benard, “Bernie” (Dorthy) Leingang, Leonard (Julie) Leingang, Rose (Don) Sturn, and Larry (Bernice) Leingang.
