Dalles Waldner, 71, Mandan, died of cancer on November 13, 2013 at Sanford Health Continuing Care Center off Collins, Mandan. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, November 18, 2013 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with Rev. Ron Hildahl officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at Weigel Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Military Honors provided by the Mandan VFW Post #707 and American Legion Post #40.
Dalles Gene Waldner was born September 18, 1942, in Hutchinson, MN. He grew up on the family farm near Hector, MN, graduating from Hector High School in 1960. After graduation, Dal enlisted in the Army, serving from 1962 to 1965, most of the time near Munich, Germany. He was trained as a sharp-shooter and a paratrooper. When he returned from the Army, he moved to Minneapolis, MN and worked in the construction business until 1987 when he started his own trucking business.
In 1973 Dalles married his life-long partner and friend, Lynn Knoll. They resided in Minneapolis until his retirement in 1997 when they moved to Lake Vermilion near Cook, MN. In 2012 they moved to Mandan, ND.
Dal’s favorite activities included pheasant hunting with friends around Mandan, deer hunting with friends around Cook and fishing with Lynn on Lake Vermilion. At the lake, Dal was the go-to person for fixing and repairing everything for his friends, always available with a helping hand. He leaves behind many friends with many treasured memories. His strong work ethic, his great sense of humor and his ready smile will not be forgotten.
Dalles is survived by his wife, Lynn, Mandan; brother, Gary (Nancy) Waldner, Omak, WA; and sister, Rita (Mike) Stenlund, Albany, MN. Further survivors include Waldner nephews, Jeff (Brenda), Olympia, WA; Eric (Nancy), Bellevue, WA; and Kurt R.E., Sierra Madre, CA; Stenlund nephew Nicholas (Alicia), Becker, MN; and niece, Stephanie, San Diego, CA.
Dalles was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Elsie Waldner of Hector, MN and mother and father-in-law, Frances and Clement (Dusty) Knoll of Mandan, ND.
