Bernadette Nuss, 91, of Bismarck, passed away September 17, 2019 at St. Gabriel’s Community, Bismarck, ND.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Fred Harvey as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 20, 2019 from 5:00-8:00 PM at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Bernadette was born on September 10, 1928 to Johan and Katherine (Bartle) Hunkele in Kandel, Ukraine.
Bernadette married Christian Nuss on May 10, 1947 in Spalt, Germany. They immigrated to the United States in 1952, starting out with relatives in Dickinson, ND. They quickly settled in Mandan, ND where they started a family and Christian started a successful business. Bernadette managed the household and cared for the five children with whom God blessed them.
Bernadette loved to spend time with family and friends. She enjoyed music, dancing, reading, bowling, bridge, swimming, and traveling. She and Christian spent time traveling all around the world and throughout the U. S. Bernadette was also interested in her heritage and was active for many years in the Germans from Russia Society in Bismarck, N.D.
Bernadette had a sharp but kind sense of humor even through the late stages of Alzheimer’s. Her smile lit up her face and she bestowed it liberally on family, friends and caregivers.
Bernadette will be deeply missed by Christian, her husband of 72 years; daughter-in-law, Debbie Nuss, son, Donald (Karen) Nuss, son, Frank Nuss, daughter, Diane (Brian) Kuehn, son, John (Julie) Nuss; grandchildren, Shanon (Steve) Gerding, Michael Nuss, Theresa (Casey) Meidinger, Benjamin (Megan) Nuss, Kristin Nuss, Annie Nuss, Sarah (Drew) Kuchta, Dustin Kuehn, Heather (Jerry) Lindsley, Christopher (Sarah) Nuss, Joshua (McKinzie) Nuss, Jacob (Kyra) Nuss; 15 great-grandchildren; as well as brother-in-law, Franz (Marta) Nuss; and numerous nieces and nephews in Germany.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Irmgard; and sons, Alexander and Michael.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Bernadette’s name.
