Arthur "Butch" Hilfer

April 9, 1937 — April 20, 2021

Arthur “Butch” Hilfer, 84, a lifelong Mandan resident, died April 20, 2021 at his home after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 PM on Friday, April 23, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with Fr. Dennis Schafer celebrating.  Inurnment will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.  Cremation has taken place and the family will greet friends from 11:30 AM to the time of the service at the church on Friday. The service will be livestreamed at the bottom of Art's obituary page on the funeral home website.

Art was born April 9, 1937 in Fort Rice to Adam and Mary Hilfer.  After high school he attended trade school and became a bricklayer.  He was proud of his trade and was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers.  On September 12, 1959 he married Bernice “Bun” Landeis in Mandan where they made their home and raised their three sons.  Art felt proud and blessed to have shared his life with his three sons and their families.  He and Bernice traveled to many states and enjoyed going to Las Vegas.

Blessed to have shared in his life is his wife of 61 years, Bernice; three sons, Wynn (Belinda), John, and Don (Nadine); numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Dennis (Sherry) Hilfer; sisters, Gertrude Schaff and Ellen (Clarence) Small; and sister-in-law, Esther (Hilfer) Erhardt.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Hilfer; sisters, Lorraine (Pete) Fettig and Phyllis (Don) Fairaizl; and brother-in-law, Joe Schaff.
