Markus "Mark" S. Wald

Born on January 2nd, 1950 in Bismarck, North Dakota died on April 24th, 2008 and resided in Mandan, North Dakota

    <dc:subject>Markus "Mark" S. Wald</dc:subject>
<dc:title>To our great loss Markus “Mark” Stanley Wald passed away suddenly on April 24, 2008 from a beating heart that could not keep up with his strong body and energetic mind.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 pm on Monday, April 28, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant and Rev. Leonard Eckroth as Concelebrant and Homilist. Burial will take place at a later date at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Linton, ND.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Weigel Funeral Home with a Rosary / Parish Vigil at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Mark was born January 2, 1950 to Stanley M. and Helena (Bosch) Wald in Bismarck, ND. Growing up on a farm near Kintyre, ND (in the sauerkraut triangle region between Napoleon and Linton) Mark learned the values of hard work from his parents and great play from his older siblings. Mark attended schools in rural Kintyre and as a freshman went to high school at Cardinal Muench Seminary at Shanley High School in Fargo North Dakota at the age of 13. In 1966 Mark returned home to St. Anthony School in Linton and graduated in 1967 from Emmons Central High School in Strasburg, ND. That fall Mark began his computer career in Rapid City South Dakota at the National College of Business. Graduating in 1970 Mark was hired as a management trainee at Fidelity Finance Company’s St. Paul office. He was drafted into the U.S. army during the Vietnam conflict. Because of his computer expertise, Mark was assigned to the United States Army Management Systems Support Agency working with an IBM S/360 Model 65, MVT, the full operating system under HASP, and OS Job Control language at the Pentagon in Washington DC. After active duty Mark worked at Lystad’s in Grand Forks as a data processing manager until 1974, at Patterson Land Company in Bismarck until 1975 and the Social Service Board of North Dakota. At the SSB Mark was Computer Systems Analyst-Coordinator until November 1980 after which he started working at Basin Electric Power Cooperative involved in all aspects of data processing and business environment to his final work as business systems and information systems auditor. During his lifetime he attended evening classes and earned his BS in management from NDSU and a Masters in business administration from UND. Mark met his wife Rebecca Boehm in 1976 while attending classes at BSC (BJC at that time). They were married in 1977, had a son Stanley in 1978 and a second son Theodore in 1983.
Mark was a hard worker and made sure everyone was always busy, whether rock picking or fixing anything that needed to be fixed. Mark loved to farm and farmed 2300 acres in Emmons, Cass and Morton counties. Rock-picking was a big event, often called “rock parties”. Many “rock pickers” were involved building over 30 big piles of rocks which were used to shore up Crown Butte Dam and many river banks and watershed areas. He also loved fishing. Mark has been to Alaska over 15 times from Ketchikan to Kodiak to Anchorage. Hooking a 200 lb halibut in 2006, Mark proudly displays the tail in the house. Mark also enjoyed hunting, especially bird hunting with his black lab, Ginger. To get his brother Harvey, who had been blind since 1977, out of the house, Mark began a mini auctioneering side-line career in 1982. Harvey and Mark auctioneered together many years as Wald Auction Service. After Harvey passed away Mark continued auctioneering as Log Cabin Auction Co. Mark auctioned a variety of sales including several wildlife and benefit groups and of course garter auctions at weddings. The last garter brought in over $800!
Mark was the recipient of the Bismarck Elks Club Voluntary Elk of the Year in 1995-1996. Mark and his wife Becky received the Dakota chapter of American Fisheries Society Aquatic Resource Conservation Award in 2005 for helping provide rocks to shore up Crown Butte Dam in Morton County and clearing up water shed areas that drain into the dam. Mark of course loved card games especially pinochle, gin rummy, hearts, and sequence or “chippy-chippy”. He was always willing to teach youngsters or a niece or nephew how to play, adding a little flair to their playing by “suggestions of cheating”. Mark never taught you everything about the game just in case he would get beat. Playing pool on his regulation size pool table was his favorite past time, rarely getting beat, although sometimes he might “let” you win.
Mark has done tax consulting since 1976 with over 150 clients in several states other than North Dakota. Mark had very fast feet and would dance the polka with whoever could keep up with him. He loved the Irish dancers and cloggers and thought he could have been one of them. One of his ‘skills’ was making “Red Eye”. He typed up the recipe and followed it religiously going by ‘color’ and of course ‘taste’. He taught many how to make perfect red eye calling the younger students his ‘grasshoppers’. Mark was a wheeler-dealer never paying the original suggested price, even going to the extent of flipping a coin for a $25 price difference. The last flip of the coin resulted in him paying the $25 for the semi-tractor he was dealing on. He also liked to get a little something out of the dealer such as a cap, can of green John Deere spray paint or some other little trinket. Mark always needed to know what was going on. He called whoever, whenever, and wherever when he needed some information. (He was very nosy or like the Germans say “Wunnervitzig”). Mark took care of and loved the Catholic priests. He spent a lot of time with Father Charlie Backes and Father Leonard Eckroth fishing and playing cards. Mark respected them and treated them as real people. Mark will be missed by so many people; he truly was one of a kind, never afraid of anything or anyone, and never backed down from what he thought was right. Mark always stood his ground; while planning his son Stan’s wedding Mark refused to wear a pink tie and vest. Mark always said when he passed on he would meet his brother Harvey, Fr. Backes and his grandmother Bosch in Heaven and play a mean game of pinochle.
Left with many fond memories and an example of a life well lived are his wife of 31 years, Becky, Mandan; two sons, Stanley (fiancée, Alyssa Thompson), Gillette, WY and Theodore (special friend, Kristin Frank), Hazen, ND; his mother, Helena Wald, Linton, ND; two sisters, Sister Siena Wald, Turlock, CA and Luella (Jack) Klein, Linton, ND; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Isadore (Margaret), Kintyre, ND and LuElla Wald, Bismarck and many Nephews, Nieces and Friends.

Mark was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Harvey.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the St. Joseph Church Trust Fund.

Angeline Toman

Born on July 28th, 1918 in Mandan, North Dakota died on April 17th, 2008 and resided in Bismarck, North Dakota

    <dc:subject>Angeline Toman</dc:subject>
<dc:title> Angeline (Ang) Toman, 89, died April 17, 2008 of Alzheimer’s and a stroke at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, where she had been a resident this past year.

Monday, April 21, 2008 at 1:00 pm a remembrance of her life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with Rev. Deanna Reikow officiating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery following the service.

Visitation will be held Sunday, April 20, 2008 from 6 to 8 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation will continue from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm on Monday at the funeral home only.

Angeline D. Finz Toman was born at the Mandan hospital July 28, 1918 to Anton Finz, a German immigrant and Northern Pacific engineer, and his Swedish wife, Helga Carlson Finz. She attended Mandan schools, graduating from Mandan High School in 1935. She attended Macalester College and Nichol’s School of Business in St. Paul and worked there for two years.

On June 7, 1941 she married Bernard (Barney) Toman. Barney then went to work at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland, Oregon where their first child, Jerry, was born. They returned to Mandan to help Barney’s father in Toman Tailoring and Dry Cleaning after the flood of 1943. When Barney’s two brothers returned from the war, they incorporated three businesses in Mandan and Ang often ran the “up front” business of Toman Cleaners.

Ang was a very social person whose list of friends extended around the world, but her friends in Mandan were her first priority. She loved entertaining or helping others and could do so on the “spur of the moment.” Barney tended trees, but Ang tended people with food, letters, or conversation. Travel and hosting as a member of Friendship Force was a greatly enjoyed adventure along with many other trips to Europe, South America, and Japan. The last of which took them, and their son, Lee, back to Barney’s roots in the Czech Republic shortly before Barney’s death in 1994.

Barney and Ang enjoyed many years with the Mandan Bunch at their north shore trailer on Brush Lake where Ang learned to catch those tasty perch. Her love of art spurred her desire to begin painting lessons, which involved her with the Mandan Art Association. Many of her paintings are treasured possessions of friends and family. Her love of books, reading, and learning was nurtured by her Fortnightly Club. They were both members of a Birthday Club and the Mandan Revelers. She was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. Most important were her many friendships with her sisters in PEO Chapter AK, where she held many offices. Her greatest love was her grandchildren whom she hosted for many overnights and weekend lake visits. She was proud of all their accomplishments and the five great grandchildren that enlarged her loved family.

The family would like to gratefully thank Eunice Modin, Ang’s caregiver of two years, and all of the caring staff at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for their special care this past year.

She will be missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Marie, Evergreen, CO; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Bill Baron, Mandan; son and daughter-in-law, Lee Toman and Jan Cronquist, St. Paul, MN; three grandsons, Christian and Keely Toman, great grandchildren, Madison and Ethan, Kansas City, KS; Todd Baron and Wendy Walton, Alpine, WY; Cory Baron, Hawthorne, NY; granddaughter, Heidi and Todd Erickson and great grandchildren, Jordan, Jack, and Kendall, Brentwood, CA; six nephews and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Eugene Finz, and one grandchild, Nicole Toman.

The family prefers memorials to PEO Chapter AK Scholarship Fund or the First Presbyterian Church of Mandan.
